The Back Row Pew: The Urban Legend of the Black's Farm and Black's Beach

This story was told to me by several locals... it may be Urban Legend but several sources have confirmed the account.
The La Jolla Institute is located in an area of La Jolla called, La Jolla Farms. It was once owned by,William Black, who bought the the land in the 1950's. The area known as Black's Farm sits on the Bluff overlooking the beach, now called Black's Beach. There, he owned a horse farm and raised race horses for the nearby Del Mar Racetrack. He also built a large beautiful home overlooking the beach. The land had previously been used during World War II as a training ground and a lookout. It was also home to a Native American tribe, the Kumeyaay Tribe, from 3,000 BC- 1822 AD. They lived on this land and buried their dead here.
When William Black died in 1967, (he passed away on the GOLF COURSE, at the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club) some of the property was purchased by UCSD, including the large parcel and home where William and Ruth Black resided. This home is where the Chancellor of UCSD lives. But William Black, who had no children, willed about 6-7 Acres to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He was not LDS, but had been acquainted with members and generously donated the land to the church. The church sold most of the land but kept a small parcel where they built a small building that housed the La Jolla Institute. It is across the street from UCSD and has a back entrance and parking lot for the Institute Students. In about 1992, the La Jolla Farms neighborhood asked the church to upgrade the building to fit in with the other homes ranging from approximately 10 million to 60 million dollars. The old structure was torn down and the new institute building was built to fit in. It is is gated and has an upper floor for a Senior Couple to live.
There is a private road that goes from La Jolla Farms down to Black's Beach. Anyone can walk down the steep paved road but to drive down you must have a La Jolla Farms resident to drive down. The Beach is a surfer beach and not meant for novice swimmers or surfers because of the rip tide and rocks. If you walk 1/2 mile North on the beach, you will be on the Clothing Optional portion.
