This week we did a little of everything in senior missionary life. We started with a Saturday morning breakfast at a little place called Snooze that Sister Pew has liked in the past. The Eggs Benedict were excellent.
We helped our wonderful sister missionaries with 2 lessons this week. One with a young man that had taken lessons before and contacted the Church to begin lessons again. The other was with a Chinese young man that was a Christian. We could not tell if he was just curious or serious but hopefully will find out soon if he accepts another lesson. We gave him a Book of Mormon and he said he would begin reading.
We saw another UCSD volleyball game against the UC Irvine Anteaters (who picks that name?). UCI won but Collin Shannon, our YSA star played really well.
We said goodbye to Sister Nuusila who transferred to Poway and said hello to Sister Whitaker. Sister Whitaker is from Syracuse. This is Sister Walker's last transfer before leaving for home, so in 6 weeks, we will say hello to another sister. They come and go but all of them work hard and teach well.
We went to a wedding reception for Dylan Houghton and Allison Jones, two of our YSA that are now graduating to a family ward. It was fun to see how happy they looked.
After FHE, we went with about 10 of the YSA to Yogurtland for frozen yogurt. It was fun to have a brief outing with them. They study so much and/or work so much that it seems they don't have a ton of social time.
We went to the temple again and did more initiatory work. We have all our existing initiatory work done and can now focus on about 20 endowments to be completed. The San Diego temple is beautiful outside and inside.
We had two surprise meals this week. The first was with one of our English missionaries, Christian Johnson from Las Vegas. His sister lives in SD and works for the Padres so he came down to see her and texted us about 8 AM on Saturday morning. Of course we were not up yet, but met them at 10:30 in La Jolla for brunch. It was a great reunion and fun to catch up with former Elder Johnson. What a great missionary he was!
The second was with 2 of our SD YSA. Stevie and Amanda are bf/gf and knocked on our door on Sunday evening to invite us down to the institute where they had cooked a Brazilian chicken dish with rice. It was really good and nice to be treated by them. What a great couple.
Lastly, we held our first of hopefully many "Come Follow Me" Sunday afternoon lessons with the sister missionaries and 2 recent converts (Hector and Oscar). We discussed for an hour the scriptures about Jesus and Nicodemus and what it means to be born again - both temporally and spiritually. What a wonderful hour. We hope to do these every Sunday afternoon with whoever wants to come - recent converts and investigators.
Lastly, we learned how expensive salt water taffy is in La Jolla. We filled up a sack with a reasonable amount of various flavors and took it up to the counter. They weighed it and said, "that will be $35". We paid but learned a lesson to find out the price first.
